I once browsed over the statement that Drew Barrymore doesn’t like social media. For some reason that made me feel validated. Celebrities are just people of course, but they are in the entertainment field. Social media seems like a necessity for them. The fact that some disagree intrigues me. The mention of Drew Barrymore made me look into celebrities who aren’t on social media. My search bought up celebrity quotes that made me think “I couldn’t have said it better myself!” So instead of saying it myself this week, I’m letting them.
Here are ten of my favorite celebrity quotes stating what they don’t like about social media.
I find this Drew Barrymore quote absolutely hilarious and pretty much spot on. I often find myself thinking, in my swearing-stress-relief ways “I effing hate social media, what the hell, it’s so weird. Just why?” Even though I 100% understand the psychology behind it, I often find myself equal parts baffled and angry. “…weirdo aspect of the world” just really nails it on the head for me.
So simple and true. The root of a lot of the problem.
As an 80s kid I only really knew the Ghostbuster’s and GroundHog Day Bill Murray. I didn’t know that when I googled “celebrities not on social media” I would relate to him so much. Bravo Bill! Appreciating everything we are was difficult to do even before there was a virtual world. I honestly found it completely impossible to filter out the noise enough to appreciate my own talents when I was all in on social media.
Couldn’t agree more Emma. You seem like my people, wanna grab a coffee sometime?
I started writing this week about how we have all these strangers, acquaintances, past friends, in our daily lives now. People we mistakenly let social media label as friends. It is dangerous on so many levels.
I think it’s safe to say that the reason I’m an online presence at all today is because it “really burns my onions.”
As a parent I often remind myself of the following pithy quote: “children will become who you are, so be who you want them to be.” It’s a constant work in progress in this day and age. Thanks for the reminder Lisa!
Some things are worth working on and some things are just meant to leave your life. That’s how I feel about many parts of my relationship with social media.
Reminds me of myself on Instagram. I tried it out, but I don’t think I can ever go back to the way it was. “I’m not doing none of that.” I just love that.
I’m a parent and an educator so I definitely worry about our youth. I also don’t want to ignore the fact that there is no age limit to how constantly being thrown images of others “amazing” moments may affect the life satisfaction and mental health of grown-ups as well. Especially since it seems there is an unwritten expectation that by a certain age we should “have it all figured out.”
And lastly, because I know we’re all thinking it…
The irony is that I feel more connected to these celebrities than I ever would if I was scrolling through their Instagram. I hope to gain the same sort of connection through words as well.
