I’ve always been a “quote person.” I use wise words as a means for maintaining a certain mindset.
After years of paying attention to them, I now have a pretty solid list of good short quotes that keep me in line. Most recently I’ve applied them to my new found focus on “social media minimalism.“
So here goes!
1. “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot
I always loved this quote because it is the fight against regretful thoughts. Now, I kind of apply it to how reducing my social media use gave me a new focus. This new focus led me to do something I always wanted to do – write.
2. What’s My Business?
Its so easy to lose sight of our own goals, achievements, and positive qualities when we are focused on a.) showing them off to the online world, and b.) repeatedly viewing others’ situations.
Social minimalism helped me apply this practice online, and remembering these words helps me focus on my own story, goals, and personal tasks.
3. “You’re Gonna Miss This” – Trace Adkins
My husband and I belt out this tune in the midst of chaotic moments with the kids.
It helps us bring humor to moments that can seem impossible to get through. It also reminds me why I decided on reducing my social media use. I quite literally was missing important moments when my mind was too focused on the screen.
4. One day at a time
5. “You’re supposed to be the leading lady of your own life…” – The Holiday movie quote
Such a fun quote! I love the reminder to take time for myself and to be my best version. My focus on social media minimalism has been surprisingly empowering. It let’s me be content with being the leading lady in my own mind’s movie and not feel like I have to post my highlights for validation.
6. Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow
I remember this quote being on repeat in my head after I graduated high school. I’ve always wholeheartedly believed in it. I didn’t always know what I wanted to do with my career/overall life, but I always knew that following my heart was more important than following money.
7. Love People Use Things – The Minimalists
The Minimalists speak a lot about being intentional with what you do and what you let into your life. They say this quote at the end of every podcast episode because if you walk away with anything its that putting people above any “thing” will always put you in the right direction.
At first when I began reducing my social media use I thought I was a bad friend. I didn’t like or comment, I stopped regularly sharing photos, and I unfollowed. But a light bulb went off when I realized that social media is a thing, and I was choosing to put people above it.
8. Tonight We Are Young – Fun
This is one my favorite “good short quotes.” It’s why I don’t sweat growing older. If you can let your mind be free you can embrace that youthful spirit at any age. It reminds me that life’s too short not to prioritize having fun.
9. Getting lost is not a waste of time – Jack Johnson
I’ve always sort of felt lost in a sense – both figuratively and literally.
If you know me, you know that I never know where I’m going. You know not to speak North, South, East, or West in my presence. But the times I’ve been so brutally lost have been some of the most fun in my life.
Figuratively, well, there’s something to taking the “broken road”, the long way, or the path of most resistance. I love a good challenge!
And, finally…
10. “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” – Richard Carlson
“Covid-times” has helped me re-focus my priorities. Loved ones and personal self-care is the “big stuff” so really its all about “sweating the big stuff.”
